Description

Gynecological and obstetric violence is a form of gender-based violence that directly impacts women’s health and well-being. This type of violence can include mistreatment, medical procedures without consent, misinformation, or overmedication. For women with disabilities, the situation is even more severe, as they also face other forms of violence, such as institutional, medical, economic, and sexual violence.

These practices are often so normalized within the healthcare system that they are not recognized as violence or abuse, but rather perceived as acts of care. This is especially true because the way society views women with disabilities is often ableist and patriarchal, leading to ongoing violations throughout their lives, particularly regarding sexual and reproductive rights.

This study aims to shed light on this issue and understand how it affects the lives of women with disabilities. A qualitative methodology will be used, grounded in Latin American feminist perspectives. The research will include interviews, ethnographic work, body mapping, and discussion groups with adult women with disabilities. Organizations connected to disability, sexual and reproductive rights, and feminist activism will also participate.
