Women with intellectual disabilities often struggle to get the healthcare they need. This study looked at the experiences of 120 women in Chile who have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
The women said they had a hard time understanding medical terms, weren’t given enough time to ask questions, and didn’t get tools like pictures to help explain things. Many also felt disrespected by doctors, who treated them like children or had negative attitudes.
The study found that healthcare systems are not doing enough to support these women. It suggests that doctors and nurses should get better training and use simple, clear communication, like using pictures or easy-to-read materials. Making these changes, suggest researchers, would lead to fairer, more respectful healthcare for everyone.
